Before You Begin:
Ensure you have access to a stable internet connection and have the necessary personal information and documents at hand.
Check Eligibility
Before initiating the registration process, it’s crucial to determine if you meet the eligibility criteria for Universal Credit. Generally, you may qualify if you:
- Are on a low income or unemployed?
- Are aged 18 or over (there are exceptions for certain individuals aged 16 to 17).
- Are under State Pension age.
- Have £16,000 or less in savings.
- Reside in the Uk
Gather Necessary Information
To streamline the application process, prepare the following information:
- Personal Details: Full name, address, and contact information.
- National Insurance Number: This unique identifier is essential for your application.
- Bank Account Details: Information about your bank, building society, or credit union account where payments will be made.

- Visit the Official Website: Navigate to the Universal Credit online service.

- You will also be asked to answer security questions to enable you to sign into your account in the future.
- Fill in the details in the ‘About you’ section, including an email address you can access easily.
- A temporary confirmation code will then be sent to your email address to verify it.

- Enter your current address.
- Tell us if you have changed your UK address in the last six months.
- Click continue and your account has been created.
Step 2: Get your application started

- You can now start to apply for Universal Credit.

- This is when you’ll need your details of housing costs such as rent agreements, any savings, income, and family details such as people who you live with.
- It’s important to provide all the information requested when making your claim as any missing information can cause a delay in processing and could affect your first payments.
- When you start your claim, you’ll be asked for your relationship status and if you live alone or with a partner.
- If you live with a partner, you’ll need to make a joint claim.
Step 3: How to make a joint claim

- To make a joint claim, you’ll need to link your details with your partners.
- If your partner has started to joint claim, there will be a linking code for you.
- Otherwise, you can just create a linking code for your partner to use.
- Make a note of the code to give your partner.

- They will then have seven days to use this code to start their claim before the code expires.
- If your partner has already started a joint claim, enter their details and the linking codes they give you on this screen.
- When you make a joint claim, your application to-do list will look like this.
- Both partners will be able to see and fill in most of each other’s details.
- The claim cannot be submitted until both partners have filled in their details.
Step 4: Application to-do list
- If you are claiming as a single person, your application to-do list will look like this.

- Fill in all sections from your to-do list such as your nationality, housing, who lives with you, work and earnings, money, savings and investment income other than earnings, education and training, health caring for someone, bank account, building society, or Credit Union details.

- You must have a bank account, a Building Society account, or a Credit Union account for your Universal Credit payments to be made.
- This will also help us confirm your identity.
- You can view your to-do list at any time.
- You can also sign out of your claim form and return to it later.
Step 5: Confirm your details
- Once you’ve completed everything in your to-do list, you’ll be asked to confirm your details are correct.
- You’ll be given the option to change the answers that you gave to any section, but if you are happy with the answers that you gave, click yes to each one.
- If you fully agree with the details on your claim, tick the checkbox and click continue.
- It is your responsibility to tell us immediately if your circumstances change.
- You’ll then be asked to sign a Final Declaration page agreeing to this.
- Once you have read the terms of the Declaration, tick the box at the bottom of the page to say that you understand them and agree.
